Parents…

Hi, I am 13 and I want a ferret. I have done a lot of research on them and I think they are the animal for me. I have read everything in this site over 5 times. I know I am ready to have one but the only problem is, my mom wont let me have one.

I know every thing I need to know about them. I have even went places like shelters and pet stores and talked to people there. My mom said that she doesn’t want one, and she said that she is worried about the money. She is worried about vet bills and how much they will cost if i get one.

I love animals and all of the ones I have now are all healthy and happy. I know I can take care of it. If you have any advice on what to do please tell me. Thank you for your time 🙂

Dear Kailey, your mom is right about the vet bills when they start to become ill, plus the need for shots every year and there is the fact that the ferret needs to be neutered as well.

One can never know everything about ferrets .. had mine since 2003, 7 years, and I am still learning something new about them every day. So 5 minutes just aren’t enough.

My advice is to wait until you are old enough to make your weighes. It wouldn’t be fair to your mom to bring a ferret in the house and probable health problems and put her up with the bills.

You will need a good cage, good food, bedding, water bottle, food bowl, etc. as well. You have to give it the right food or it will get health problems for sure.

Knowing what I know from experience with ferrets, I would never give my child a ferret, knowing what I know now. If a mother is not supportive about the choice of pet, trust me she does know what she is saying. Me and my better half both have a job, a special saving account for the ferrets or otherwise we’d be in trouble.

Hopefully that gives you an idea on your mom’s worries.
