Would it be a good idea for me to get a ferret?

I’m 12 years old and live in USA. I have 5 siblings. My little brothers make a whole lot of noise!

Would a ferret bite them because they make so much noise?

And also we have a lot of chickens. If the ferret got loose would it go and kill any of the chickens?

Thanks for any answers!

Ferrets are wonderful, loving pets. They are a ton of work and a lot of money! I am sure you would be a wonderful ferret owner, just remember that sometimes younger children can hurt ferrets as they are actually very fragile. And if they get out of the house, chances are it will not survive the elements or other animals (dogs, birds of prey etc.) They are very sneaky and will easily slip out of an open door! I applaud you for doing so much research prior to getting a ferret. It is best to wait if you are not sure it is a great environment for a new little fuzzie! Good luck!

I wanted a ferret since i was your age 🙂 but I had to wait until I was 18.

I’ve had my two baby ferrets for 7 months now and it was definitely worth the wait, they are amazing! I’m sure you’d have no trouble looking after a ferret, but they can be pretty expensive – they need veterinary standard food with high levels of fat and protein and fat, and low levels of fibre. It’s damn pricey! Plus kitten milk, fresh meat, treats, toys, harnesses, vaccinations, revolution, sterilisation, microchips (if you want), vet visits, EVERYTHING!!! Honestly, almost all of my income goes towards my two fuzzies, lol.

All the years i spent waiting till i could get a ferret, i researched more and more about them, I loved reading about them 🙂 This site is my favorite. I hope enjoy your ferret, whenever you get him or her. You sound like you’d be a good owner!

You know, Rose, you sound like a really mature young lady and I think any ferret would be happy to be looked after by you. However it might be difficult with having 5 little brothers around the place and while I’m sure the ferret wouldn’t bite them, the noise might make it very nervous.

Of course it all depends on the ferret. Some are really cool and fit in anywhere, while others aren’t happy with with loud sounds.

Also, it’s very possible that if your ferret did get out, it would find the chickens a tasty treat if it were a hunting type. I know my two boys are pretty enthusiastic about jumping on each other and don’t think they’d have any qualms about jumping on a chicken. Other ferrets might run the opposite way 🙂

If you think you could keep your ferret in a cage in your room and are certain your brothers wouldn’t let it out, then maybe it’d be okay. But maybe it would be better to wait till your brothers are older before you get a ferret.
